What is PPE? Personal Protective Equipment

Personal Protective Equipment is an important means to prevent injury during the work. Ideally, it is to control the hazard source, and to create a safe working environment and to reduce the potential danger. Only when we are unable to control the hazard source, will we use PPE. Therefore, PPE is the last ditch.

The use of PPE usually implies that the working environment is potentially dangerous and that it is the primary means of preventing injury. Therefore, it is very important of the reliability and effectiveness of equipment selection, proper use and maintenance, the user's adequate training. 

PPE is defined as: "All equipment worn or held by workers at work hours to protect their health and safety from one or more risks." For example: Safety helmet, protective gloves, safety clothing, safety shoes and safety rope.

Basic Principles for the Use of PPE

a) It applies to sites and conditions that could be dangerous if exposed;

b) It takes into account the health status of the wearer and ergonomic requirements;

c) If necessary, it can be correctly applied to the wearer;

d) It can effectively prevent danger or control risk (without worsening the risks).

Personal protection is mainly used in emergency situations, rescue work or in the inspection, maintenance and repair work as a short-term means of protection.

What is PPE? Personal Protective Equipment 

Standard of PPE

PPE is usually required to conform to established standards. For example, the insulated gloves used in live operation should conform to EU Standard EN60903. The standards have been extended to European Community. Personal protective Articles Ordinance (89/686/EEC) ensures the introduction of appropriate standards for the use of PPE at work.

For the simple design of PPE, it must be consistent with the manufacturer's statement. 

As for PPE "not in simple design" and providing the lowest risk protection, it should be tested according to the test procedures by the organization agreed by the authorized agency (EC Test) and the member state. It is used to establish and prove PPE meets relevant requirements in PPE regulations (89/686/EEC). 

As for PPE in "complex design", it should conduct the type test by the authorized agency and the authorized agency should conduct continuous production monitoring (or meet other authorized production modes). It should have CE symbols and necessary information (EC symbol indicates PPE has conducted type test by the authorized agency) or conform to the statements which have been made of the manufacturer of PPE in "simple design". It must also comply with the requirements of the use of the official language of the country. In addition, the manufacturer must provide technical documentation related to PPE.
